Learning outcomes

This class aims at providing the elements to understand the issues related to the design and management of systems for the processing and transmission of multimedia data (speech, audio, and video) over Internet

Required background

To properly understand the content of this class, basic topics from previous classes are recommended: "Computer Networks" and "Image and Signal Processing."

Program

- introductory elements -
Recall of TCP/IP and on the digital representation of sound, images and video(sampling, quantization, compression, codes).

- Quality of Service (QoS) -
QoS tools used at the edge of the network (shaping, scheduling, queueing); network architectures that supports QoS (IntServ, Diffserv).

- Protocols and systems for the transmission of multimedia data -
Transport level protocols (RTP, RTCP); architectures for multimedia transmission (H.323, SIP, Asterisk); application level protocols (Skype, Application Level Multicast).

- Perfomance evaluation -
Tools for the measurement and the analysis of the network (Wireshark, active measurements); measurements on networks.

Examination Methods

Examination consists of a project and the corresponding documentation. In addition 9but it is not compulsory) the student can select an advanced topic and present it in the classroom.
