Learning outcomes

Module: TEIL I
-------
On successful completion of this seminar students should be able to apply the metodology of Generative Grammar to the analysis of German sentence. They should also be able to recognize the importance of theoretical explanations for both : i) recognize the processes of normization of linguistic structures and ii) appreciate the relevance of the comparative approach.

Module: TEIL II
-------
On successful completion of this seminar students should be able to apply the acquired competence in linguistic analysis to the mechanisms of phoneme-grapheme mappings. They should also be able to recognize the importance of theoretical explanations for the development of orthographic norms.

Program

Module: TEIL I
-------
Grammar and linguistic theory - syntax. The program will focus on the following phenomena: typological word order variations (SOV/SVO), V2 restriction, impersonal subjects, clitic syntax. Descriptive Grammar will represents the starting point to make a clear distinction between a traditional grammatical approach and a theoretical approach based on the concept of linguistic competence.
(The seminar is taught in German and English, depending on students' language competence)

- Grewendorf, G. (2002), Minimalistiche Syntax, A. Francke Verlag, Tuebingen
- Haider, H. (1993), Deutsche Syntax – generativ, Gunter Narr verlag, Tuebingen

Module: TEIL II
-------
Grammar and linguistic theory - orthography and phonology. In this part of the course the relationship between phonemes and graphemes is discussed. We will use the tools of modern linguistic theory to explain which (phonological, but also morphological, syntactic and semantic) principles guide the mapping from sounds to orthographical representations.
The seminar is taught in German and English, depending on students' language competence

An extensive bibliography will be given during the seminar and posted on the e-learning platform
