Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with the necessary linguistic skills to understand written and oral English in contexts pertaining the nursing profession. Specific attention will be paid to the acquisition of medical-scientific vocabulary and of the functional language needed to ensure successful communication between nurses and patients. Students will be introduced to PubMed; the structure of scientific articles in English will be analyzed.
Lessons will include pair and group activities to practice the language covered in class; students are therefore encouraged to participate actively in class.

Program

Vocabulary: body parts and internal organs, body systems, diseases and symptoms, medical instruments and procedures.
Functional language: admitting patients, taking vitals, asking patients appropriate questions, give instructions to patients, describe a procedure to a patient, communicate with the patient’s family, communicate with other healthcare professionals.
Scientific articles: where to find as scientific article, definition of abstract, structure and linguistic characteristics of a scientific article.

Examination Methods

The final exam will be a written test on the topics covered in class.
