The student should know the structural and biological properties of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses and the related mechanism of pathogenesis. Moreover, the student should know the major microorganisms involved in infectious diseases and the methods of infection diagnosis.

MM: METODOLOGIA EPIDEMIOLOGICA, IGIENE E PROBLEMI PRIORITARI DI SALUTE

The course aims the student to know and study the main determinants of health and disease, the preventive strategies both individual and collective, and of interventions to promote the health and safety of their users. Particularly, it aims to understand the causes, the pathogenic mechanisms, and methods of prevention and control of infectious diseases and the main chronic diseases as outcomes of lifestyles.

MM: SICUREZZA NEGLI AMBIENTI DI LAVORO
------------------------
To acquire basic knowledge and understanding on health and safety prevention and health promotion and management in workplaces. To acquire, through field examples, knowledge and understanding about general principles of occupational health, risk assessment, health surveillance, fitness for work, health education, legislation, with reference to different risk factors (e.g., chemicals, physical agents, biohazards, ergonomics, organization and psychosocial factors, injuries). Attention will be dedicated to let the student acquire knowledge and understanding about the roles of the different professionals and institutions committed to prevention. The student will acquire knowledge and awareness on the main risk factors, adverse effects and their prevention in the professional activities of nursing and will gain awareness on the role of nurse in educating persons on health and safety issues in workplaces.

Introduction to Medical Microbiology. General information on infectious diseases. Prophylaxis of infection by microbial agents. Structure of bacteria. Bacterial pathogenesis. Antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Staphylococci, Streptococci, Enterococci, Mycobacteria, Neisseriae, Enterobacteriaceae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas. Sepsis and nosocomial infections. Opportunistic Infections. Structure and replication of viruses. Viral pathogenesis. Antiviral therapy. Herpesviridae, Viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV), Orthomyxoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Retroviridae (HIV). General information on protozoa, fungi and helminths. Diagnosis methods of bacterial and viral infections.

Introduction to epidemiology: - Definitions, objectives and features epidemiology; - Measures in epidemiology. The concept of health, disease and causes of disease. Criteria for assessing the causal link. Epidemiological studies: descriptive, analytical, and experimental studies. Elements for the assessment of the main problems of health of a population: - Major diseases in the general population; - Main causes of death in the general population. Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases: - Epidemiological chain and transmission mode: endemic, sporadic, epidemic diseases; - The direct and indirect prophylaxis of infectious diseases; - The specific prophylaxis: vaccine and vaccinations, elements of serum and chemo-prophylaxis; Epidemiology, primary and secondary (screenings) prevention of main chronic-degenerative diseases: ischemic heart disease, diabetes and most frequent
