Learning outcomes
Acquisition of the fundamental concepts which are needed for understanding the nature and the problems of the social and political organizations and different forms of democracy. Acquisition of the capacity of formulate independent critical judgments.
Program
The course provides historical-philosophical and theoretical-critical instruments for a philosophical inquiry on "citizenship", with particular reference to the notions of "freedom" and "equality" and the relationship between "politics", "society" , "economics".
The first part of the course will offer an introduction to the history and "models" of political philosophy. It will be supported by the reading of selected passages from ancient, modern and contemporary classics of political philosophy (Aristotle, Locke, Tocqueville, Marx, Arendt, Foucault), as well as selected passages from philosophical-political debate on the topic of "common" and the "commons" (Dardot-Laval).
The second part of the course will be devoted to a twentieth-century classic in political thought - T.H. Marshall, "Citizenship and social class" - which introduces the issue of social citizenship and reflects on the tension between democracy and capitalism.

METHODS
Lectures will be based on reading and discussion of texts and topics.

Examination Methods
For both attending and non-attending students: oral exam (from January to September 2020).
The exam wil be based on analysis and discussion of texts. Students are therefore required to bring the readings at the exam.
Final evaluation will consider:
- philosophical-political knowledge
- argumentative skills
- critical thinking skills
