The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes

The course is included in the learning area on Law, New Technologies, and Sustainability. The course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge of the complex relationship between law, environment and sustainability with a focus on ecosystems integrity and social justice. Such relationship will be analysed in a twofold perspective: public law rules and procedures and their actual application, on the one side; employment protection and social sustainability articulated along the interactions between law, new technologies and fundamental rights (consumer and labour rights) in the context of selected supply chains (agricultural, logistics and gig economy) and company networks.
By the end of the course students will have acquired understanding of the concept of sustainability as it results from different regulatory perspectives, that integrate, according to multilevel and transnational logics, into the legal approach to sustainability. Students will also be able to solve actual problems using a ‘compliance’ and ‘conflict-preventing’ approach. Work in groups and written assignments based on Problem Based Solving (PBS) methods will provide students with the ability to assess the implications of the regulatory framework, develop appropriate reasoning and terminology, and formulate independent judgments. The teaching method is aimed at improving continuous learning skills.


MODULE 1 - Environmental Law
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the complex issues related to the administrative function of environmental protection, with particular attention to procedural aspects and the issues of air pollution and climate change.
In particular, the ways in which the interest in environmental protection is combined with other interests and the role played by society, environmental associations and other institutional actors in administrative decisions (assessments, authorisations, certifications) are analysed.

The distance learning lessons (1 CFU, 6 hours) (prerequisites) are devoted to the following topics:
- The administration and its activity
- Administrative procedure

In-presence lectures (5 CFU, 30 hours) are devoted to the following topics:
- The legal framework: the sources of environmental law
- Environmental administration: organisational profiles
- Environmental risk assessment
- Procedures: environmental assessments (EIA and SEA)
- Air pollution and combating climate change: functions and procedures
In the final part of the course, three dedicated focuses are organised with the support of the PBS (problem based solving) methodology:
- Focus and in-depth study of the sources of environmental law (PBS)
- Focus on and in-depth study of environmental assessments (PBS)
- Focus on and in-depth study of air pollution procedures (PBS)

MODULE 2 - Labour protection and global value chains
The module aims to provide students with an advanced knowledge of the relationship between law and environment and sustainability in the complex meaning of ecosystem integrity, economic efficiency and social equity. In particular, the protection of labour, the focus of social sustainability, will be analysed in the relationship between law and technologies and fundamental rights of people (consumers and workers) in the selected production chains (agriculture, logistics, gig economy) and networked enterprises.

The distance learning lessons (1 CFU, 6 hours) (prerequisites) are devoted to the following topics:
- The identification of the rules applicable to the employment relationship
- The collective agreement.

The in-presence lectures (5 CFU, 30 hours) are devoted to the following topics:
- Labour protection, value chains and social sustainability
- Employers, supply chains and platforms
- Perspectives on supranational regulation between hard and soft law
- The responses of national legal systems
- What role for collective bargaining? (the supply chain contract)
- Corporate social responsibility and multi-stakeholder accountability mechanisms
In the final part of the course, three dedicated focuses will be organised with the support of PBS (problem based solving) methodologies:
- Focus and in-depth study of labour protection in agriculture (PBS)
- Focus and in-depth study of labour protections for digital platforms (PBS)
- Focus and in-depth study of labour protection in logistics (PBS)

Both courses combine lectures for 30 hours (supported by the use of PowerPoint presentations) with group exercises organised according to the Problem Based Solving (PBS) method. At the end of the course, the presentation of the in-depth papers and the final discussion are organised.

Examination Methods

Each module has a separate exam.
Both exams are held with the same modalities

For attending students, the exam will be based on two different elements:
- Oral test on the topics addressed during the course.
- Paper and presentation of the group work (max 3000 words)

For students who do not attend the lectures, the exam will be done through a single oral test.
The exam will be held in Italian.

Evaluation criteria and grade composition:
For students who will follow the lectures and carry out the planned tests, the final mark will be distributed as follows:
Oral test on the topics addressed during the course (50%)
Paper and presentation of group work (max 3000 words) (50%)

For students who will not be attending the lectures, the final mark refers to the single oral test.

The assessment will be made using the following criteria
- the depth and breadth of knowledge gained;
- the property of language
- analytical and argumentative capacity;
- capacity for critical reflection.

The final mark is expressed in 30ths.

Type D and Type F activities

Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle attività formative a libera scelta dello studente (TAF D) sono le seguenti: 

  • Un insegnamento previsto nell’elenco delle attività formative (TAF D) allegato al piano didattico del corso di laurea in Diritto per le tecnologie e l’innovazione sostenibile; 
  • Un insegnamento attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio didattico;
  • Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio didattico;
  • Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche; 
  • Un insegnamento previsto dall’Offerta Formativa di Ateneo, non impartito nell’ambito dei corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio didattico: il riconoscimento dei crediti acquisiti sarà subordinato alla preventiva presentazione di coerenti programmi formativi valutati dalla Commissione istruttoria per la didattica e approvati dal Collegio didattico. 
  • Attività formative organizzate dai singoli docenti del Collegio didattico o del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche: previa approvazione del Collegio ad esse verrà attribuito, dopo un’apposita verifica, un credito per ogni 6 ore di frequenza obbligatoria; 
  • Attività formative che implicano la partecipazione a convegni o seminari organizzati sotto il “logo” del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche o dell’Ateneo: devono essere preventivamente approvate dal Collegio didattico indicando un docente di riferimento del Collegio didattico ovvero del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche. Un credito per ogni giornata di convegno o di seminario si acquisisce dopo apposita verifica che dimostri l’avvenuta fruizione culturale del tema del convegno o del seminario. 
Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle ulteriori attività formative (TAF F) sono le seguenti:
• Ulteriori competenze linguistiche (3 CFU);
• Stage;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio didattico;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche.

Internships are aimed at enabling students to gain direct knowledge of the world of work and to acquire specific professional skills.

Internships are carried out under the responsibility of an individual lecturer, and can be carried out in professional firms, public administration bodies and companies recognised by the University of Verona.

Any CFU credits gained by doing internships will be recognised and recorded by the University in accordance with the relevant University regulations in force (Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari).
