Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with a linguistic overview of the historical grammar of the languages of the Anatolian branch of the Indo-European family and a basic knowledge of the philology of the Hittite language, which was attested in the 2nd millennium BC and is, to date, the oldest Indo-European idiom attested in written form. Expected results: 1. an understanding of the tools of comparative linguistics applied to the Anatolian branch of the Indo-European family 2. an understanding of the mechanisms of analysis and reconstruction of the historical grammar and typology of the Anatolian languages 3. an understanding of the dimension of the areal context applied to the study of ancient languages, with particular reference to the ancient Mediterranean and Near East 4. ability to read and analyze a simple text in Hittite 5. ability to present correctly and appropriately the theories and methods of Anatolian philology 6. ability to autonomously re-elaborate the competences acquired for the further course of study and/or professional activity
Program
The course offers the following content:
1. History of Anatolian discoveries in the twentieth century
2. Notes on the Hittite civilization
3. Contextualization and general features of Hittite and Anatolian languages
4. Historical grammar of the Hittite language
5. Reading of a text in Hittite language

Examination Methods
Oral exam, during which the theoretical, historical and linguistic skills acquired during the lessons will be evaluated, as well as the ability to problematize and discuss complex aspects of the study of ancient languages (also with regard to the problem of reconstruction, interpretation and comparison, as well as the reading and translation of a source examined in class). The ability to illustrate the contents in a scientifically appropriate manner will also be evaluated.
