Chemistry and Biological chemistry (2021/2022)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning outcomes
Module of Chemistry and Biochemistry Propaedeutics The module of Chemistry and Biochemical Propaedeutics is preparatory to that of Biological Chemistry as it represents the element of connection between the fundamental knowledge of chemistry and the most strictly biochemical phenomena. The course describes: - the fundamentals of chemistry necessary for the knowledge of living matter and its transformations; - the structural chemistry of the components of living matter and the relationship between biological function and chemical structure; - stoichiometry and the mechanism of a large number of reactions; - the fundamental principles of thermodynamics; Training objectives: - to know the characteristics of elements and compounds and the principles that allow to understand their behaviour in biological systems; - to understand the reactivity of the different classes of organic compounds in order to know how to interpret the behaviour in biological systems; - being able to perform elementary calculations with regard to the quantitative aspects of chemistry applied to the Medical Sciences; - to acquire a solid chemical basis to be able to interpret at a molecular level the phenomena described by biochemistry; - to know the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids; to understand the properties of enzymes, their reaction kinetics and catalytic mechanisms. Module of Biological Chemistry Training objectives - to know how living beings synthesize and degrade carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, amino acids, nucleotides and other fundamental biological molecules; - to know the structure and function of vitamins and hormones; - to understand how the human body coordinates the thousands of reactions it catalyzes; - to understand the metabolic relationships between the various tissues and organs, as well as the main systems of intercellular communication; - to know particular topics of molecular and cellular biochemistry, such as oxygen transport, transport in biological membranes, signal transduction and the molecular mechanism of contraction; - to acquire useful information on the biochemical bases of diseases.

Examination Methods
The examination of the "Chemistry and Propedeutic Biochemistry" module is oral and organized in written questions of stoichiometry, acid-base and oxidation reactions and an organic chemistry reaction mechanism. After this initial step, a series of questions will be addressed regarding the topics of general chemistry, organic chemistry and propedeutics biochemistry carried out during the course.
The examination of the 'Biological Chemistry' module consists of an oral examination consisting of an interview aimed at assessing the student's ability to use chemical and biochemical knowledge for the interpretation of metabolic processes and their alterations underlying physio-pathological phenomena in humans.
