Learning objectives
Understand the concept of neurodegenerative disease, from the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved and the various forms of the disease. Understand that there are various disease models, from the simplest single-cell in-vitro, to the more complex 3D such as organoids, up to in-vivo models.

Program
In the first parts of the lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of neurodegenerative disease, the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved and the various forms of disease. In the second part, an overview will be given of the various disease models, from the simplest unicellular in-vitro models, to the more complex 3D ones such as organoids, up to the in-vivo models. The study methods most used in the laboratory will also be discussed, such as microscopy, immunofluorescence techniques, transcriptome analysis and flow cytometric technologies. The various models will also be compared from a scientific, practical and economic point of view. Finally, some recently published articles will be taken into consideration with the aim of illustrating how these diseases can be studied in the laboratory.
