Learning objectives
Acquisition of a good command of the research tools related to early modern history, so that the student is able to critically use the sources and scientific literature related to one or more themes chosen as central to the course. The teaching activity will therefore aim to develop the individual research skills of the student as much as possible.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of the main features of European and global history of the Early Modern Age
Program
The general part of the course aims to provide students with the main coordinates for the in-depth study of the fundamental themes of society and culture of the modern age. The monographic part of the course will focus on the themes of witchcraft and its repression in Europe in the 15th-18th centuries. After a presentation of the main historiographical interpretations, we will focus on the direct analysis of a selection of sources. All students, both attending and non-attending, will have to prepare themselves on the text by M. Bellabarba and V. Lavenia (eds.), Introduction to modern history, il Mulino, Bologna, 2018. Knowledge of the text will be assessed through a written test to open questions. As regards the monographic part, attending students will write a thesis on one or some of the documents analyzed during the course. The essay must be submitted via email at least a few days before the oral exam, during which it will be discussed. Non-attending students will instead have to prepare two texts (or groups of texts) chosen from those indicated in the bibliography.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course will be divided into a first phase of presentation of the general issues and a second phase dedicated to a seminar-based in-depth study of certain issues through the direct analysis of sources.
This last aspect constitutes the fundamental element of the course, which will have a profoundly seminar-like structure. All students, therefore, are invited to actively participate and should be available to work during the course on the texts provided. They should also be willing to freely discuss their reading impressions with the lecturer and other students. Active participation will be the key element of assessment for those attending and will involve continuous work on individual readings and classroom discussions. Attendance is therefore only recommended if it can be active.
In other words: in the lectures you will discuss openly and freely (because it is precisely a seminar) what you will be reading, individually or in groups, during the course and all students should feel comfortable in expressing their points of view obviously within the limits of politeness and mutual respect.
Learning assessment procedures
General section
The assessment of the knowledge of the book Bellabarba, Lavenia, Introduzione alla storia moderna, will consist of a written test and open questions for all - both attending and not attending students. Students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of the main junctions of the history of the modern age, placing them critically within the context.
Monographic part.
The examination will take place in oral form.
For the attending students: a written paper will be requested, whose subject will be agreed with the teacher. In addition to the latter, which will have to demonstrate critical thinking skills in relation to the sources on which it will be based, active participation in the course will also be evaluated.
For those who do not attend: it is planned to read two books of choice among those proposed. The oral interview will test the knowledge of the texts and students will have to demonstrate their ability to place the topics in a correct and critical way.
Evaluation criteria
The quality of the answers to the written test will be assessed. In the case of those attending, the work done in the course of the course and the paper produced will supplement the assessment. For non-attending students, the interview will focus on ascertaining the skills acquired from the chosen readings.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The grade will be the average obtained in the written and oral part.
