Learning objectives
The course aims at providing students with competences and knowledge to understand and analyze contemporary English in its complexity and plurality, starting from the perspective of sociolinguistics. On completion of the course students will acquire knowledge of the phenomena that have led to a diversification of the English language into Global Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca. They will be able to identify and analyze with a critical approach the features, functions and implications of Global Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca, also for English Language Teaching (ELT). Students will also achieve linguistic proficiency in English corresponding to the C2 level - Common European Framework of Reference for languages.
Prerequisites and basic notions
In order to be admitted to the final exam, students must have a C2 (Common European Framework of Reference) level certificate obtained at the University Language Center (CLA) or at institutions recognized by CLA. In the second case, an equivalence certificate must be issued by CLA.
The validity of C2 language certifications obtained as of October 1, 2024 is three years from the date of achievement.

Classes will be held in English and will cover the following topics:

-English as a lingua franca
-English as a medium of instruction
-The role of language mediation
-Genre analysis
-Sight translation

Didactic methods
Frontal lectures combined with group activities with critical reading and analysis of texts to be presented in class. Sight translation practice. Learning materials will be uploaded to the Moodle e-learning platform every week.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam consists of two parts, each of which must be passed:
1) Sight translation (English > Italian*) of a text (cs. 350 words) among the genres addressed during the course.
*Alternative modes can be arranged for international students.
2) Discussion of the topics covered in the course with presentation of a research contribution, to be selected by the student and to be agreed with the lecturer, on a topic relevant to the syllabus.
Evaluation criteria
Part 1: Content and terminological accuracy, smooth delivery, sight translation skills.
Part 2: Content knowledge, metalinguistic awareness, analytical skills and critical thinking.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade of the exam is the average of the grade of the oral exam (part 1 + part 2) and the grade obtained with the C2 language certificate. The grade from the language certificate is converted into /30 according to the CLA conversion table. Students who have obtained external language certificates must obtain an equivalence certificate from the CLA before the date of the exam.
