Learning objectives
The student should be able to acquire the fundamental elements to critically interpret the History of Collecting, History of Museums, Museology and Museography. The student should be able to analyze and confront facts, formulating lines of reasoning and, consequently, the student should develop a smart and critic use of documents, sources, collectable materials, and architectural-expositive structures of museums. The course intends to give tools for a correct speaking ability on historic/artistic problems and critic/historic/structural analysis of a museum collection, and various professional figures in the museum management. The student should be able to use the correct glossary of the specific sector. The student should acquire the knowledge of various development lines of art history, History of Art Criticism and History of Taste, Collectionism, Museums; the student should also be able to reinforce different kind of critical approaches, to demonstrate capacity in reinterpretation of data and obtain critic notations.

No prior knowledge is required
Program
The course will retrace the history of the museum starting from the Hellenistic tradition up to the contemporary age, without neglecting insights into problems of a museographic and museological nature. During the lessons the following topics will be mainly addressed: the definition of Museion in the classical age and the definition of the ICOM Museum; professional figures active within museum institutions; the collection of art objects in Roman and medieval culture; the Renaissance study; the Wunderkammer; the princely collections; the French Revolution and the Louvre; the birth of the museum in the neoclassical age; the nineteenth-century museum; civic museums and the safeguarding of the artistic heritage; museums in Italy after World War II; contemporary art museums

Didactic methods
The course will take place through lectures with the help of power points and web supports; There will be visits to museums and exhibition sites, meetings with professionals and scholars of the discipline, insights into the new digital communication technologies in museums. There is no registration of lessons; in the foreseen cases (certification of positivity to Covid 19) the recovery methods will be agreed with the teacher.
Learning assessment procedures
The final assessment of preparation takes the form of an oral exam. No distinction is made between attending students and non-attending students. The duration of the exam is directly proportionate to the level of preparation demonstrated by the student (up to a maximum of 30 minutes of interview with the teacher).
Evaluation criteria
The test will focus on the topics covered in class and on the notions acquired through the specific bibliography of the course. The ability to organize knowledge, to identify the constituent elements of the case studies, to critically reason disciplinary themes, the ability to use the technical vocabulary correctly will be evaluated.
