Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide cultural and operational tools for the biomechanical analysis of human movement and sport activities (in water and on land). Part of the program will be carried out in the form of numerical exercises (data analysis) to enable the students to verify, from a practical point of view, the theoretical knowledge acquired and to familiarize themselves with the main biomechanical means of calculation.

Program

Theoretical lessons will be provided (all students together) in which the main tools for the notions of the topics listed below will be given. Furthermore, a quantitatively smaller part will be dedicated to practical experiences (also in the field and or in the laboratory by working in smaller groups of students) in order to apply the theoretical notions in an experimental context.
Herein the main topics have been illustrated:
-Linear kinematics (Displacement, velocity and linear acceleration. Projectile motion)
-Angular kinematics (Polar coordinates. Angular displacement, velocity and acceleration. Uniform circular motion)
-Linear/angular dynamics (Newton’s laws. External and internal forces; normal and tangential forces; the distribution of forces and pressure. Frictional forces. Work and Power. Kinetic, potential and elastic energy. The conservation principle energy. Impulse and linear momentum. Impacts and collisions. The coefficient of restitution)
-Muscle mechanics (The force-speed curve and the force-length curve. Muscle architecture and tension specific. Mechanical properties of different types of muscle fibers. Mechanics of tendons and ligaments: stress and strain, Young’s modulus)
-Angular Kinetics/Dynamics (Moment of inertia. Rotational kinetic energy. Torque and center of mass. Angular work and power. Principle of conservation of angular momentum. Outlines of joint biomechanics)
-Biomechanics of fluids (Statics: hydrostatic pressure, Archimedes’ principle and torsion torque (under-water torque). Fluid dynamics: viscosity and Reynolds number. Bernoulli’s principle. Hydrodynamic resistance: shape, pressure and friction drag. Fluids in linear and turbulent motion, the boundary layer. The Magnus effect)

Examination Methods

For all students (attending and non-attending) a written exam is expected (mandatory). This written exam will consist of open/closed questions and above all exercises (with numerical calculations, to be performed with the calculator alone) relating to all the topics covered in the theoretical and practical lessons/experiences.
In addition, the teacher also provides an oral exam for evaluating the performance of students whose sufficiency (or assessment) emerged from the written test is not completely "satisfactory" (in this case, the teacher wants to verify also through an oral interview the "real" skills of the student). Furthermore, the oral exam is also possible for students wishing to improve the grade obtained in their written test.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
