Learning outcomes
The teaching module named Psychology of groups aims to present a picture of the main areas of research and intervention of the psychology applied to sports teams (sports) and to active groups (exercise). At the end of the teaching module, the students must demonstrate the ability to connect the key concepts of the psychology of groups to the application contexts of sport sciences.
Program
The course is divided in two parts. The first part presents the basic elements of the course: definitions of ‘group’ in sport and exercise psychology; main group classifications and differences between ‘team’ and ‘active group’; group membership and applied implications for personal and social identity.
The second part of the course deepens the following thematic areas: (1) Group development and analysis of group structure; (2) Motivations to sport and to exercise practice in group: main theoretical approaches and applied implications; (3) Competition and cooperation in sport teams and active groups; (4) Performance in sport teams and active groups; (5) Group cohesion and performance in sport teams and active groups; (6) Leadership in sport and exercise; (7) Communication processes in sport teams and active groups.
Course organization
The course aims to strengthen not only the knowledge but also skills in the field of psychology of teams and active groups. To facilitate home-study, teaching materials will be weekly available on the web pages dedicated to the course (e-learning 2016/2017).
Bibliography
Examination Methods
The exam consists of one written test with 40 closed questions and multiple choice answers. The written test is intended to ensure knowledge and understanding of the topics addressed in the course and covers all the topics discussed during the lessons. The questions will address both the topics of General and Sports Psychology and the topics of Group Psychology. The ranking of the written test will be expressed in scores of thirty. Examination will be the same for attending and non-attending students.
