How to enroll
Step 1 – Register for and take the TOLC-SU test
1. Read the Call for applications carefully. Please note: this summary does not replace the original Call for applications, which candidates are expected to fully know at the time of their registration for the Call.
2. Sign in on the CISIA website.
3. Register for the TOLC-SU test on the CISIA website (you will be asked to pay a registration fee of €30): please keep the receipt: you will need to show it in order to enter the classroom. You can take the TOLC-SU test on site or remotely (as TOLC@CASA).
4. Take the TOLC-SU test (you can take it online from home, on dates set by the University of Verona, or by any another university part of the CISIA network). The English language section is mandatory. Please note: you can only take the TOLC-SU test no more than once a month (calendar month). It is considered valid a TOLC-SU taken starting from 1st January 2023. If you repeat the TOLC-SU, it is considered valid the one with the best score.
Step 2 – Submit your application
5. Register on ESSE3.
6. Submit your application on ESSE3. This can also be done before taking the TOLC-SU test, as long as the latter is taken and passed during the period of validity set out in the Call for applications. Attention: at the end of the enrollment procedure, the receipt containing the pre-enrollment number can be viewed, which must be kept by the candidates as it is essential to view their position in the ranking. Please note: the TOLC score should not be entered; this score will be acquired by the University of Verona directly from CISIA.
7. Check the ‘graduatoria’, or list of students eligible for admission. You status will appear as one of the following:
- Ammessa/o (vincitrice/vincitore) - Eligible and admitted: you have been included among the admitted applicants, and therefore can submit your application for enrolment by the deadline and in the ways set out in the Call for applications, or in the subsequent selection notices.
- Non ammessa/o ma idonea/o - Eligible but not admitted: you have not been admitted, nor rejected. This means that, despite not being selected in the first round, there are still places available, and you might still be selected at a later stage of the selection process. Please check the relevant updates and selection notices and, if admitted, you will be able to submit your application by the deadline and in the ways set out in the selection notice.
Step 3 – Enrol
8. If you are on the list of eligible students (graduatoria), or if you have been selected at a later stage of the selection process, enrol on ESSE3 by the deadline set out in the Call for applications, or in the notice of selection. To complete your enrolment you will need to scan and upload a passport photo. Should you need help, please see 'How to add your photo'.
9. On your ‘Payment dashboard’ on ESSE3 pay the first instalment of your student fees via PagoPA, by the deadline set out in the Call for applications or in the selection notice.
10. Wait for confirmation email. Please note: you will not receive the confirmation email immediately, since the Enrolment Office will need to process and check your documents and qualifications before confirming your enrolment.

LEGGITitle required for matriculation
Title required for matriculation: A secondary school diploma obtained in Italy or an equivalent study certificate obtained abroad.
What are basic knowledge
What is threshold knowledge
To enrol in a degree program, it is essential to possess basic knowledge in key subjects. The purpose of threshold knowledge verification is to ensure there are no significant deficiencies in specific disciplines. This verification may occur concurrently with the admission test (for courses with limited enrolment) or be scheduled during the first year.
If the verification reveals gaps in one or more subjects, matriculation is still possible; however, students must complete additional activities, known as Integrative Learning Requirements (OFAs), within the first academic year. Failure to do so will prevent enrolment in the second year.
To assist students in meeting OFA requirements, each course of study offers specific learning activities.
Basic subject requirements
- English language: B1 level (computerized) please note: students who rank below 24/30 in the English language admission test must take the B1 level computerized test at the University Language Center (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo - CLA).
- First and second language (if different from English) A2 level test at CLA. This applies to French, Russian, Spanish, and German languages. There is no threshold knowledge requirement for the Chinese language.
- Italian language (Level B2, all modules) Mandatory only for non-EU students and those who graduated from a high school where the language of instruction was not Italian. Without this certification, students cannot take any exams.
Students who do not pass the threshold knowledge test by September 30 of the year of enrolment will be enroled in the 1st year as a repeat students.
Methods and dates of verification
- English language: B1 Level (computerized) Passing the TOLC-SU English Language proficiency test with a score of 24/30 or higher also fulfils the threshold knowledge requirement for English. Students scoring below 24/30 must take the B1 level computerized test at the CLA. First and Second Language (if different from English) A2 Level test A2 level test at CLA, covering French, Russian, Spanish, and German languages. No threshold knowledge requirement exists for the Chinese language.
- Italian Language: Level B2 (all modules) Mandatory for non-EU students and those who graduated from a high school where the language of instruction was not Italian. Certification can be obtained at CLA. Without this certification, students cannot take any exams.
Note for Non-EU Students: The Italian language proficiency test (ITA-L2) taken during matriculation does not fulfil the threshold knowledge (OFA) requirement for the full B2 level in the Italian language.
Testing dates
Testing dates for threshold knowledge will be announced later and published on the CLA website: https://cla.univr.it/it/servizi/verifica-dei-saperi-minimi-e-requisiti-d-accesso
