Learning outcomes

This course will shed light on the introduction of writing into the vernacular traditions of Europe, and on the history of the production, diffusion and preservation of medieval handwritten book, through some noteworthy examples from the Germanic literatures of the Middle Ages (above all from English and German literary documents). The methodical issues involved in this ‘history of medieval text publishing’ encompasses textual criticism, paleography, codicology, book-production history, library history. The selected manuscript instances are devoted to illustrate the interplay between literary genres and audience, and the book sorts among handwritten artifacts. A specific section of the course will consider the introduction of writing and the resulting book production and conservation, from the point of view of communication science, touching some clues concerning digital editing.
