Contents of the course:
The body of Berlusconi
In the occidental tradition the body of the sovereign is constituted in analogy with the body of the Christ. Only on the base of this analogy his potestas achieves its legitimacy. In this sense, the studies of the German historian Ernst Kantorowicz about the relationship between incarnation and medieval doctrine of power which is connecting the roman right with the christian vision of the world are exemplary. In fact, the consequences of this connection are still influencing politics in the present.
If it is correct that, in the western world, the body has never been a simple attribute of political sovereignty but an essential element, it is necessary to analyse from a juristic, ethic, theological-political point of view what kind of expressions the centrality of the body has found in the history of our culture. The course intends to develop such an analysis on the base of a precise reference on present history in Italy. The reference is given by the symbolic dimension which the body is occupying in the government of Berlusconi.
