Learning outcomes
Course on social and family policies
The course is divided into two modules of lessons: Social policies and Sociology of the family.
The course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to analyze the dynamics of change of two redistributive institutions: welfare systems and the family as a mediation agency between needs (demand) and services (offer):
First Module: Social Policies
The teaching aims to provide the conceptual, methodological and cultural basis needed to analyze and interpret the genesis and modification of Welfare and Citizenship systems, with particular reference to the factors of crisis affecting social policies and social inclusion systems . The aim of the course is to help critically read the role of the Italian Social Work inside the Italian Welfare System, at its central and peripheral levels, and to increase the knowledge and skills of students in reading the relationships between the various public sectors of Welfare (health, social welfare) and between the public and private sector (association and cooperativeism).public.
Second Module: Sociology of Family
The course aims to give the students critical tools for reading and interpretation of the relationship between families and social policies, taking as analysis perspective the role of women. In a mediterranean model of welfare system, which is anchored and has played on the family as a private producer of goods and services of 'public importance' (with a strong impact on the level of welfare of the community), the trends of change in families change their social role. The families face increasing difficulties in carrying out their duties of care.
Program
First Module
The program is centered on the following points:
1. The birth and development of public welfare systems: social factors and dynamics and sociological interpretations;
2. The crisis of public welfare systems: social factors and dynamics.
3. the transition from Keynesian capitalism to the neo-liberal one and consequences on social policies; the crisis of social policies is also a crisis of the legitimacy of democratic systems. .
3. Towards new configurations of welfare systems?
4. The new actors of social policies (associationism, cooperativism, market).
Second Module
An analysis of economic, social, cultural and political factors will be developed to focus the dynamics of the social change. In particular it stands out as the most significant changes of the status of women have changed the forms and family relations..
Topics covered:
- structural changes in the family in Italy: trends since 1970
- changes in relationships between couples and generations
-attitudes and behaviors related to birth, fertility, and marriage rates
- marital Conflict (Separation and Divorce)
- new family forms: immigrant families, informal marriage, step- families, adoptive families, and unions with partners of the same sex.
The analysis of family changes will be conducted through a reading and interpretation of the most relevant ISTAT data on the topics dealt with.

Examination Methods
First Module
The assessment of learning outcomes will be on a preliminary written assessment of the acquired knowledge and an integrative oral exam only upon request of the individual students, in case of integration of the mark acquired in the written test.
The written test is aimed at ascertaining the knowledge of the topics in the program and the ability to critically read the dynamics of the evolution of Welfare systems.
The supplementary oral exam consists of an interview aimed at developing the issues that emerged in the written test, with questions also on other parts of the study program.
Second Module
Examination procedure: oral exam
The oral exam aims to evaluate the student's ability to enucleate the social, political and cultural factors underlying family changes, new household needs, and the impact that new family configurations s have on welfare policies.
