Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student should have a basic knowledge of:
- the fundamentals and methodologies of socio-cultural anthropology
- the relationship between socio-cultural anthropology and other social sciences
- the contemporary globalized world and the relationship between "global" and "local" (needed to understand human variation from a social and cultural viewpoint)
- the worth contribution the discipline can make to the study and understanding of ritual bodily modifications (in particular of female circumcision) and their governance
Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- elaborate anthropological analysis in relation to main "glocal" phenomena
- implement the acquired anthropological knowledge in the interpretation of ritual bodily modifications (in particular of female circumcision, also by recognizing and assessing different feminine models and cultural understandings of the practice)
- recognize and knowingly apply the method of cultural relativism
Making judgements
At the end of the course, the student will have acquired:
- the capacity to critically question socio-cultural variation in public and private contexts
- the capacity to recognize and critically analyze behaviors led by multiple cosmologies and diverse relations with the biological and cultural body
- knowledge to contrast marginalization and discrimination of circumcised women
Communication skills
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- consciously and critically use specific terms relating to socio-cultural diversity;
- consciously and critically debate in relation to ritual bodily modifications and in particular to female circumcision
Learning skills
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- analyze the relationship with cultural diversity within main "glocal" phenomena
- find sources for caring out anthropological studies and analysis concerning ritual bodily modifications and female circumcision
- enhance interdisciplinary approaches
Program
The course deals with:
- introduction to the conceptual methods and tools of basic socio-cultural anthropology (especially the concepts of culture and society)
- the fundamentals of socio-cultural anthropology in relation to the contemporary globalized world and social inequalities
- the fundamentals of socio-cultural, legal and medical anthropology in the study of multiple forms of bodily modifications and in particular of female circumcision

Learning assessment method
Learning levels will be assessed by a written examination.
The student must demonstrate:
- to have understood the important elements of the discipline's main theoretical arguments
- to be able to express his/her own reasoning in a precise manner and in a limited amount of time
- to be able to critically analyze and connect elements of socio-cultural, legal and medical anthropology in relation to female circumcision
