Learning outcomes

Using complementary teaching approaches (lectures on general history, monographic lectures on specific topics, seminars and labs aimed at analysing sources), the course aims to take an in-depth look at problems, working methods and tools used by historians and to provide students with the foundations for an understanding of the reality and dynamics of early modern European societies (XVI-XVIII centuries) through a series of thematic lectures on the most important social and institutional aspects of the modern world. The course specifically aims to prepare students to be able to give a critical reading of historical events and phenomena.

Program

After illustrating the crucial problems and questions of Italian and European history through an examination and discussion of contemporary documents, the course will go on to look at the history of the family itself. The aim is to gain an understanding of family structures and how they evolved (from the XV century until the early decades of the XX century) by showing how family relationships and the idea of the family are the products of cultural conditioning.

Examination Methods

Written examinations and the subsequent oral examination (only for those who first passed the written exam) must be taken during the same examination period, even if on two different dates. A successful written examination which is not followed by an oral examination in the same examination period will be considered null and will need to be taken again during the next exam period.
