Learning outcomes

the aim of the course is to refine the skills of grammatical, rhetoric, stylistic, historical and literary analysis which students will need in order to examine the most representative texts of Latin literature. Furthermore, it intends to introduce students to the communication dynamics of these literary works and to give a first insight in the philological method.

Program

Between grammatica and rhetoric: The figurae sententiarum (reading, translation, linguistic and grammatical analysis of chapter 9, 2 of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria).

Given the specialized character of the course, we recommend to take part regularly to the lessons. Students who will not be able to attend classes should study Quint. Inst. IX 1, 1-25 and the following texts in addition to the program described in the course catalogue:

Examination Methods

The final exam will be partly oral and partly written. Students will be requested to read and translate orally one or more excerpts from the Latin texts enlisted in the course catalogue. Furthermore, they will present orally a stylistic and grammatical analysis of these excerpts and will answer questions about topics discussed during the course. They will finally be requested to write a prosodic and metric analysis of a hexameter chosen among the texts previously translated.

Nota Bene. Before sustaining any exam regarding the disciplinary sector L-FIL-LET/04 (Latin Literature, Latin Philology, Latin Grammar, History of Latin language) which will allow the student to obtain 24 credits (minimum level required in order to teach Latin in the Italian high schools), it is compulsory to pass a written exam, consisting in translating a Latin text into Italian. This written test is preparatory to further exams and therefore it does not provide credits.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
