Learning outcomes

The course aims to offer competence in the structural and linguistic analysis of journalistic texts of various origins and destinations, as a prerequisite for a professional use of journalistic Italian. Specifically, the course aims to help understand the fundamental characteristics of the language of newspapers, highlighting its lexical, syntactic and rhetorical peculiarities. It also aims to define the specific features of the different types of articles from a linguistic point of view and as regards the strategies of discursive approach. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to use the knowledge acquired on a practical level and therefore have the ability to proceed autonomously with the formal analysis of an Italian journalistic text.

Program

1) General characteristics of the language of newspapers: variability by type of newspaper, by cultural or political position, by thematic sections, in diachrony; prevailing linguistic models; communication functions: news and comment.
2) The Italian of newspapers: lexicon, syntax, rhetoric, argumentation level.
3) Journalism and new media: effects on language and textual structure.
4) Text types: layout; headline; linguistic and argumentative peculiarities of the different thematic typologies of the articles; analysis of exemplary texts.
