Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to make students aware of the fundamental concepts of the sociology of mass communications and the sociological reflection on the main mass-medium.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basics of sociology of communication

Program

In the first part of the course the main theories concerning communication and especially mass communication will be studied and analyzed. The theme linked to public opinion, its historical development and its most recent changes will be examined, as well as the main sectors of journalistic activity and the various media, from the press to the web, highlighting the problems related to management and to journalistic marketing, without neglecting the importance of ethics and the responsibility of the journalist. In the second part, on the other hand, further issues concerning information in crisis and emergency contexts will be addressed, the role of emotional journalism in the mediated representation of suffering and cruelty, the relationship between journalism and immigration and politics in Europe. Contents: ecology of media-media logics-history and sociology of media-characteristics of digital media-information and disinformation-emotional journalism and violence-media and immigration-crisis and infodemic communication.
