Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with sociological tools with which to analyze publishing and journalism, as social institutions, occupational fields and technological forces
At the end of the course the students will have acquired the conceptual and methodological bases to be able to interpret the world of publishing and journalism as a social practice, as a socio-political field and as a profession, constantly evolving with respect to digital technologies. They will also be able to apply the knowledge acquired to concrete cases that will be suggested and analyzed during the course.

Program

The course will focus ontheories, actors and practices. In particular, we will illustrate:
- the main concepts of the sociology of communication useful for reading the publishing and journalistic field;
- the methodologies of analysis and expression in publishing with both historical and epistemological relationships between the social sciences, publishing and journalism;
- editorial and journalistic forms and practices in Italy and in the world.

Students are advised to carry out a preliminary review of the fundamental concepts of sociological knowledge starting from the contents of a handbook of sociology by themes (ex. "Sociologia", by J.C. Alexander and K. Thompson) and / or by authors (ex . "Le tappe del pensiero sociologico", by R. Aron). An English version of both is available.

Examination Methods

The evaluation consists in verifying that the student has acquired:
1. The contents of the course (with specific reference to the recommended texts);
2. The ability to critically and originally connect the proposed contents, producing a synthesis between knowledge and personal re-elaboration;
4. The ability to produce written and / or oral expression that is logically consequential and adequate to the level of depth of the analysis required.
5. The ability to synthesize thought.

To achieve these objectives, two alternative assessment methods are proposed, among which students can choose.
1. Method with final exam: Production of a written text for each of the three open questions, starting from the texts recommended in the bibliography. Each answer will be evaluated up to 10 points, divided as follows: a) 2 points for accuracy of the topics covered; b) 3 points for clarity and articulation of the exposition; c) 2 points for the ability to critically synthesize the themes; d) 2 points for lexicon properties; e) 1 point for calligraphic clarity and spelling accuracy (if applicable).
2. Methods with presentation and final paper: students who quite regularly attend the course can choose this exam method for which they will have to: a) give a presentation, supporting themselves with slides (dates agreed during the course); b) write a paper of 3000-4000 words (including notes, figures and bibliographic references) to be sent to the teacher, according to the methods agreed at the beginning of the course. The theme of the presentation and of the paper will be defined with the teacher, based on the topics addressed in class and will be a critical reworking of the recommended bibliography, course contents and any ad hoc recommended bibliography. The final evaluation will be out of thirty and will be the average of the evaluations of each part (presentation and paper).

In both cases, the final evaluation derives from the average of the results obtained in each test.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
