Program

- Ecological factors that influence the grapevine and determine its cultivation areas. Temperature, solar radiation, precipitation. Bioclimatic indices and their practical use.
- Life and annual cycle of the vine; vegetative and reproductive sub-cycle. Phenology and ecological factors that influence it.
- Climate change and its effects on viticulture, plant physiology and grape ripening. Mitigation techniques.
- The bud apparatus: Prompt buds, winter buds. Flower induction and bud fertility. Factors affecting fertility.
- Bud dormancy and factors that influence it.
- Classification, properties, biosynthesis, tissue localization of the main compounds of the grape (organic acids, sugars, polyphenolic substances, etc.) and their evolution during development and maturation. Effects of environmental parameters.
- Regulation of the development and ripening of the berry: influence of the number of grape seeds, role of hormones; influence of growth conditions and main environmental parameters; stress physiology and implications on the productivity and ripening of the fruit.

Didactic methods

The course includes lectures and practical exercises in the field. In case of limitations due to COVID, upon presentation of the relative request on the appropriate form, supports such as video recordings or additional teaching / bibliographic material will be provided.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral for both students following and not following lectures. The aim of the exam is to assess the knowledge of the subjects listed in the course program. The ability to connect systemically different subjects, the deep knowledge and understanding of the subjects will be also matter of evaluation. The final vote will be expressed out of a maximum of 30 points.

Evaluation criteria

The general knowledge of the topics covered, the ability to expose the concepts in an exhaustive, clear way and with language properties will be assessed. The ability to link topics together will also be evaluated.
