Deadlines and Administrative Requirements
For deadlines, administrative requirements, and announcements regarding graduation sessions, please refer to the service Graduation Sessions – Science and Engineering.

Final Examination Regulations
The final examination for the achievement of the degree is carried out under the guidance of a supervisor and consists of the preparation of a written thesis. The thesis may be a theoretical analysis, the solution of a specific problem, the description of a work project, or the report of an experience gained in a company, laboratory, school, etc. The final work should preferably be written using TeX/LaTeX/AMSTeX formats, with the aid of the LaTeX Frontespizio package. The thesis must first be submitted in electronic format to the members of the Thesis Evaluation Committee and then presented in two printed copies during the final discussion.

The thesis is normally written and discussed in English and includes a summary in Italian. Upon request by the candidates, the thesis may be written and discussed in Italian. In this case, it must include a summary in English.

Thesis Discussion
The thesis discussion will take place before a Thesis Evaluation Committee, appointed by the President of the Mathematics Teaching Committee. The discussion will last approximately 20–30 minutes and will be held within the 30 days preceding the official graduation session date. The discussion is open to the public. The Committee will be composed of at least three faculty members, including, if possible, the supervisor, and chaired by the tenured professor with the highest academic rank.

Thesis Evaluation
The Thesis Evaluation Committee will assign a score to the final examination, ranging from 0 to 5 points, based on the following criteria:

  • knowledge acquired by the student during the thesis work;
  • level of understanding demonstrated by the student;
  • independence of judgment;
  • ability to apply acquired knowledge and to communicate the results clearly and effectively.

At the end of the regulations, reference tables for Master’s theses are provided, indicating detailed evaluation criteria. The Evaluation Committee will send a report signed by all members to the President of the Final Examination Committee, including for each student the assigned score and any additional comments.

Final Examination Committee
The Final Examination Committee is the same for all students in the graduation session and is composed of at least five members, including the Chairperson, who is the tenured professor with the highest academic rank. The Committee determines the final grade, which is calculated by summing the weighted average of the exam grades from the study plan (excluding extra credits) with the score from the final examination.

Additionally, a score from 0 to 2 points is added for the student’s academic career, as indicated in Table 3 of the thesis regulations. The final grade, expressed in one hundred and tenths (out of 110), is rounded to the nearest whole number (if equidistant, the higher number is considered). The final score cannot exceed 110/110, with the possibility of awarding cum laude only by unanimous decision of the committee, to candidates who have achieved a score of 110.

Graduation Proclamation
At the end of the final evaluation, the Final Examination Committee proceeds with the official proclamation of the Master’s graduates in Mathematics, during a public ceremony.

For further information, please consult the Final Examination Regulations.

Need to Activate an Internship for the Thesis
For internships aimed at the preparation of the thesis, it is not always necessary to activate an internship through the Internship Office. For more information, please consult the dedicated document available in the "Documents" section of the internship and placement service.
