Learning objectives
The course focuses on two aspects of the Russian language: its morphology and syntax, and its linguistic variations. During the course, a sample of Russian texts characterised by a variety of linguistic registers will be read, analysed and translated. Several translation techniques and strategies will also be explained and implemented. At the end of course, students will be able to: 1) demonstrate to have the Russian language skills that correspond to the C2 level of the CEFR; 2) apply the acquired knowledge in an in-depth analysis of complex texts characterised by different registers, preferring the ones that belong to the business and socio-political sphere (LM38), and to the literary or linguistic-didactic sphere (LM37); 3) develop their own personal and coherent opinion on the linguistic issues studied in the course.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Only students who have obtained a C2-level language proficiency certificate are allowed to take the exam.
Program
(1) Fundamental concepts of sociolinguistics: language varieties, types of linguistic variation, speech community, linguistic repertoire.
(2) The contemporary Russian language: main processes and trends.
(3) The status and domains of use of the Russian Language in the Contemporary World.
(4) Russian as a pluricentric language.
(5) Varieties of the Russian language: standard language, prostorečie, žargony, colloquial speech.
(6) Functional styles of the Russian language: legal-administrative, scientific, and publicistic.
Note: The syllabus is the same for both attending and non-attending students.

Learning assessment procedures
Oral exam
The oral exam consists of two parts:
Part 1: Theoretical questions on the content of the syllabus (value: 15/30).
Part 2: Reading, analysis, and translation of a text (value: 15/30).
Students attending the course will be required to conduct an in-depth study on a specific topic related to the course content. This study will be presented in a 25-minute presentation during the course. For grading purposes, the presentation will be considered as part of Part 1 of the exam and will be worth 15/30.
Evaluation criteria
- substantial correctness and completeness of the answers in terms of content;
- analytical skills;
- clarity of presentation and argumentative ability;
- knowledge of the subject-specific language;
- ability to work independently in the analysis.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade will be the weighted average of the language certificate grade (50%), and the oral exam grade (50%).
