Learning outcomes

The course aims to show the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for the main alterations of homeostatic systems of the body, the functional consequences detectable on various organs and apparatuses, the compensation mechanisms activated as a result of these alterations, and how they can themselves constitute pathophysiological mechanisms of disease. They are particularly addressed:
• alterations of the hydro-electrolytic balance;
• alterations of the acid-base balance;
• alterations in renal function;
• alterations of cardiac function;
• regulation of vascular tone and alterations in pressure homeostasis;
• alterations in respiratory function and hypoxia;
• alterations in hepatic function;
• alterations in hemostasis and thrombosis;
• alterations in cardiac electrical impulse formation and propagation.

Program

• Causes and mechanisms of edema and ascites formation, fluid losses through vomiting and diarrhea
• Plasma osmolarity alterations
• Hyper- and hypokalemia
• Acute renal failure
• Chronic renal failure
• Glomerulopathies and tubulopathies
• Pathophysiology and molecular basis of primary and secondary arterial hypertension and organ damage
• Heart failure
• Pulmonary edema
• Ischemic heart disease
• Pathophysiology of the respiratory system
• Chronic respiratory failure
• Acute Respiratory Failure (ARDS)
• Bronchial asthma
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD, Pulmonary Emphysema)
• Restrictive pulmonary diseases
• Pulmonary embolism
• Pulmonary heart
• Hypoxia
• Alterations of the acid base balance of metabolic and respiratory origin
• Acute and chronic corticosurrenal insufficiency
• Hyperaldosteronisms (primary and secondary)
• Pheochromocytoma
• Pathophysiological mechanisms of shock
• Alterations of bilirubin metabolism and excretion
• Hepatic cirrhosis
• Malabsorption
• Alterations of hemostasis and thrombosis
• The mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias

Examination Methods

Oral and unique. In principle, the student will be questioned on four topics (3 of General Pathology Pathophysiology and one of Clinical Pathophysiology) on each of which will be expressed a vote that will serve for the calculation of the arithmetic average for the final vote

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
