The course aims to make students able to: use and interpret the main measures of frequency and association in the epidemiological field; recognize and critically assess the main study design

MM: METODOLOGIA DELLA RICERCA SOCIALE

The general focus of the course refers to the research methods in social sciences, questionnaires in particular. The student will acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills for selecting constructing and managing a research questionnaire based research in the health care field.

MM: STATISTICA MEDICA E EPIDEMIOLOGIA
------------------------
The course aims to provide students with basic skills in inferential statistics applied to quantitative variables in the biomedical field. The course also includes a review of the main descriptive statistics. At the end of the course students will be able to calculate and interpret some descriptive and inferential statistics that are commonly used in scientific literature.

• Programming and analysis of research in the health field • The objects of the observational research (outcome, occurrence parameter, determinant) • Measure of disease in the human collective (incidence, cumulative incidence, prevalence) • Measurement of the association (attributable risk, relative risk, Odds Ratio) • Confounding, effect modifiers and Bias • Classification and design of health studies (cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, clinical trial) • Quantitative research in Health care • Diagnostic and screening tests: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value of a screening test • Ethical principles for research involving humans • Guidelines for a good practice in research

The course includes the following subjects: - General aspects on the questionnaire, typical research designs requiring questionnaires, types of administration, types of adaptation per subject, languages, culture and objectives. - Currently used standardized questionnaires: outcome questionnaires and patient-satisfaction questionnaires; - Questionnaire construction; endpoints and theoretical framework; questionnaire structure; questioning; measurement issues (individual questions and measurement scales); - Questionnaire and statistics; questionnaire validation and data processing; Online questionnaires: the course foresees a practical exercise consisting of the construction of a questionnaire through a dedicated software.

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS. Measurement and measurement scales. Frequency distributions. Measures of central tendency and variability. Joint distribution of two qualitative variables. THEORETICAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS. Random variables. Normal distribution. Use of the standard normal distribution. SAMPLING. Population and statistical sample. Sampling distribution of an estimator: the sampling mean. STATISTICAL INFERENCE. Confidence interval. Test of hypothesis. Test of hypothesis significance. Student's t test for independent samples.

The final evaluation of the profit will be made through a written test with exercises; if this test is passed, then an oral interview will be carried out.

The final test is a written exam including both multiple-choice questions and open questions. The aim of the test is to assess the knowledge of the topics discussed and the ability to interpret some descriptive and inferential statistics. The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
