Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide knowledge on the reform of the welfare system in connection with the most important processes of social change that have invested European societies and in particular Italy.
The objective of the course is the developing of students abilities on the critical analysis of the changes in the labor market, in the family context, in the demographic structure of the population. The course will highlight all these linkages and relationships of interdependence, with the purposes to analyze the transition to new models of welfare.

Program

After the introduction and the definition of the ‘Italian’ welfare model, the focus will be the concepts of subsidiarity, community care, social capital and reproductive work (specific function of the family) in order to verify the existence of social, political and cultural factors that can lead to a residual welfare model (liberal hypothesis) or to a network model, which gives new social actors (in particular families and the third sector) sustainable care functions.
