Program
The course is structured as follows.
First part:
- Introduction to the concept of organization in sociology
- Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches in organization studies
- The research design
Second part:
- Approaches to organizational analysis aimed at supporting organizational change
- Data collection techniques in qualitative research
- The process of analyzing the empirical documentation
During the course, materials of empirical studies will also be provided to better link the theoretical concepts to the methodological aspects of empirical research carried out in organizational contexts, and where possible group exercises will be carried out.

Didactic methods
The teaching methods consist of:
- lectures with moments of discussion
- exercises in groups based on empirical study materials provided in class
- simulation of a qualitative research design on the basis of the organizational contexts in which students work (in groups)
Learning assessment procedures
The final grade consists of two parts. The first part to be evaluated will be the group work carried out in the classroom consisting in the simulation of a qualitative research design starting from the organizational contexts in which the students work (this part will be evaluated with a score from 0 to 4). The second part of the grade is given by a written test with open questions (with a score from 0 to 26).
The exam materials are the slides, the lessons' notes, and the following parts of the text by Mario Cardano, La ricerca qualitativa, Il Mulino, Bologna, 2011:
Chapter II: only paragraph 1.2 (excluding sub-paragraphs): pp. 49-54
Chapter III: paragraph 1 only: pp. 103-113
Chapter IV: introduction only (pp. 147-160) and paragraph 3 (pp. 174-176)
Any further materials will be provided during the lessons
Evaluation criteria
The group work presented in the classroom is assessed according to the following criteria:
- clarity of the formulation of the research object
- adequacy of the tools with respect to the research question - the credibility of rationale of the research design and consistency of the reasoning.
The written test will evaluate the understanding and the ability to re-elaborate the course contents.
