Program
The module aims to present some reseach in Linguistics related to the dimensions of multilingualism and multiculturalism. It will also address some issues of pragmatics that can be defined as the study of the contexts of language use and languages in the relationships between speakers. In particular, cross-cultural pragmatics questions the communicative dynamics in multicultural contexts between native and non-native speakers of a given language and culture. Knowledge of such linguistic and communicative mechanisms through theoretical representations (e.g., speech act theory, Austin 1962) and practical analyses of linguistic data (e.g., reactions to compliments) aims to provide practitioners with a more articulate and informed key with respect to peer and practitioner-patient communication in contexts of linguistic and/or cultural difference.
