Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student must (1) know the linguistic tools needed to read and interpret the scientific literature in their field of rehabilitation; (2) develop and apply reading and comprehension methods; (3) understand the structure of written and oral scientific language; (4) reformulate the contents of their research in a written format.

Introduction to medical English, brief history, morphology
Health and illness, parts of the body
The national health care system, hospitals and primary care, health professionals
Symptoms and signs, basic investigations
Taking a history, physical and mental examination

The nervous systems
Speech and language, language acquisition, multi-language assessment, speech and language deficits
Explaining diagnosis and management, discussing treatments

Clinical scientific research: epidemiology, research studies, ethics
Data presentation and visualization
Scientific articles – structure and contents
Posters and presentations

Reading and comprehension of selected scientific papers (systematic review, research study, case report, editorial)

Revision and consolidation of selected grammar topics (intermediate/advanced level) throughout the course
