Program

The module aims to present pragmatics which can be defined as the study of the contexts of language and language use in the relationships between speakers. In particular, cross-cultural pragmatics investigates the communicative patterns in multicultural contexts between native and non-native speakers of a given language and culture. Knowledge of such linguistic and communicative mechanisms through theoretical representations (e.g., speech act theory, Austin 1962) and practical analyses of linguistic data (e.g., reactions to compliments) aims to provide professionals with a more articulate and conscious insight with respect to peer and professional-to-patient communication in contexts of linguistic and/or cultural difference.
