Learning outcomes

The course will pursue 4 main objectives:
• Knowing the principles of Medical Oncology and Palliative Cares.
• Knowing the rational bases and procedures of the screening, diagnosis and staging procedures of the highest incidence tumors.
• Knowing the treatment objectives and the specific strategies (principles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, molecular target therapies, immunotherapy).
• Knowing the rational bases and the modalities of interventions in order to support cancer patient (pain therapy, nutritional support, etc).
In detail, the course will focus on assistance to patients with chronic medical illnesses, both in stability and instability (heart failure, AMI and angina, COPD and asthma). The approach considers contents and assistance modalities to activate specific self-help behaviors considering that most of the patients with chronic illness live at home and the hospitalization time is very short. Patient problems will be focused by considering their evolution, the evaluation of the patient and the choice of care interventions based on the patient's evidence, appropriateness and needs. The instability/acute exacerbation will be dealt with an assistance protocol. Impact and experience of the disease both on patient and his/her family will be also considered. Aspects of rehabilitation and palliation will be explored according to symptoms in the advanced stage (eg dyspnoea). This Teaching develops on the knowledge of the 1st year of nursing (assessment of breath, meaning and signs/symptoms of hypoxia, dyspnoea, principles of therapy, principles of nursing, supervision, physiology, pathophysiology and general pathology). Contents are linked to the two following modules regarding therapeutic education and community nursing for the early discharge and the related supportive needs.
