The student should know the structural and biological properties of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses and the related mechanism of pathogenesis. Moreover, the student should know the major microorganisms involved in infectious diseases and the methods of infection diagnosis.

The teaching of Hygiene aims to develop the understanding of the epidemiology and infectious and chronic degenerative diseases prevention and to evaluate the role of environment and lifestyle of human health with particular focus on healthcare sector.

The course introduces the student to the understanding of the determinants of health, risk factors, prevention strategies both individual and collective, and of interventions to promote the health and safety of their users. It also aims to understand the causes, the pathogenic mechanisms, and methods of prevention and control of infectious diseases

The main aim of the course is to present the health risks for health care workers in their occupational duties in order to promote the different shapes of prevention of possible diseases associated with these jobs. The course introduces the student to the understanding of determinants of health, risk factors, prevention strategies both individual and collective, and of interventions to promote the health and safety. It also aims to understand the causes, the pathogenic mechanisms, and methods of prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Introduction to Medical Microbiology. General information on infectious diseases. Prophylaxis of infection by microbial agents. Structure of bacteria. Bacterial pathogenesis. Antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Staphylococci, Streptococci, Enterococci, Mycobacteria, Neisseriae, Enterobacteriaceae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas. Sepsis and nosocomial infections. Opportunistic Infections. Structure and replication of viruses. Viral pathogenesis. Antiviral therapy. Herpesviridae, Viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV), Orthomyxoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Retroviridae (HIV). General information on protozoa, fungi and helminths. Diagnosis methods of bacterial and viral infections.

1. Introduction to Epidemiology: definition, objectives and epidemiology characteristics, measures in epidemiology. 2. The concept of health, disease and causes of disease epidemiology. Criteria for assessing the causal link. 3. Epidemiological studies: descriptive, analytical, experimental. 4. Elements for the evaluation of the main population health problems: the main diseases in the general population, leading causes of death in the general population. 5. Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases: the epidemiological chain and the methods of transmission (endemic, sporadic, epidemic diseases), the direct and indirect prophylaxis of infectious diseases, the specific prophylaxis (vaccine prophylaxis, basic knowledge of serum prophylaxis and chemoprophylaxis. 6. Epidemiology and primary and secondary prevention of major chronic diseases: ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus, COPD, malignancies, screening.
