Learning outcomes
Students will acquire/improve their ability to understand and produce ¬both written and oral texts about nursing practice. Particular attention will be given to the lexical, syntactic, phonological and pragmatic aspects of medical English.
Program
The course plans to develop the students' competences in relation to grammatical structures, vocabulary and functional language relevant to professional practices.
Specifically, the focus is on the following topics:
A) Present simple vs Present Continuous: Health professionals, Health and Medical History, Prepositions of place and movement: Giving directions, the hospital and its departments. Working Abroad.
B) Past Tenses (Simple and Perfect): The admission procedures and the hospital – Patient records,Imperative tense: Give information and First aid
C) Making Comparisons: Describing pain
Question forms: Symptom reports
Aspects of the Future: Introduction to a care
Problems and aids, Should/shouldn’t: Give advice.
Main body systems, their illnesses and disorders.
Rehabilitation, Wounds, Medical Imaging and Patient Management
D) Conditionals
Expressing possibility and obligation.
Modal Verbs: Types and forms of medication
Giving reasons: Types of therapy.
E) Passive Forms - How to read & write a Scientific Paper/Abstract.
