Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce the basics of general and clinical nursing and to develop students’ knowledge about: concepts of care and taking care of the person and their family; ethical principles that inspire and guide clinical practice; clinical methodology to identify the patients’ needs and how to plan nursing activities and evaluations of outcomes.

Program

Preoperative nursing:
- giving information to get the surgical agreement from the patient and to reduce anxiety
- evaluating the type of surgery and the risk of surgical site infection
- surgical nursing preparation: preoperative shower and hair removal, oral hygiene, bowel preparation, food recommendations, suspending of smoking
- preventing thromboembolic complications;
- considering the patient’s personal space and cosiness and privacy

Postoperative nursing:
- postoperative mobilization and vigilance, the resumption of peristalsis and food habits;
- managing wound dressing and drainage
