Learning outcomes
The student should know the structural and biological properties of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses and the related mechanism of pathogenesis. Moreover, the student should know the major microorganisms involved in infectious diseases and the methods of infection diagnosis.
Program
Introduction to Medical Microbiology. General information on infectious diseases. Prophylaxis of infection by microbial agents. Structure of bacteria. Bacterial pathogenesis. Antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Staphylococci, Streptococci, Enterococci, Mycobacteria, Neisseriae, Enterobacteriaceae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas. Sepsis and nosocomial infections. Opportunistic Infections. Structure and replication of viruses. Viral pathogenesis. Antiviral therapy. Herpesviridae, Viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV), Orthomyxoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Retroviridae (HIV). General information on protozoa, fungi and helminths. Diagnosis methods of bacterial and viral infections.
