Learning outcomes

The main aim of this academic course is that the learner could be able to comprehend the fundamentals of diagnostic approach and therapeutic management of some specific diseases, especially but not exclusively in the gastroenterological area. The learner should be able to recognize the key characteristics - signs and/or symptoms - of these diseases, as well as to suggest related and clinically consistent diagnostic procedures and initial therapeutic managements.

Euvolemia and related disorders: hypovolemia and hypervolemia
Diarrhea and constipation
Inflammatory bowel diseases: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
Peptic ulcer
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Cholelithiasis and related complications
Acute and chronic pancreatitis
Chronic liver disease and liver diagnostics
Liver cirrhosis and related complications (hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hepatorenal syndrome, bleeding from esophageal varices, hepatocellular carcinoma)
Acute liver failure
Pneumonia
Fever of unknown origin
Systemic lupus erythematosus as example of autoimmune disease
