Learning objectives

The course aims to develop students' skills in comprehension and production, both written and oral, of scientific texts. Particular attention will be given to the lexical, syntactic, phonological and pragmatic aspects of medical English.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The course focuses on the microlanguage related to the nursing profession (both in its scientific and practical aspects). For this reason, a proficiency in English—both written and spoken—equivalent to a B1/B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference is required. The lessons will primarily be conducted in English.

• Introduction and scientific morphology 101
• The skeletal system and movement
• The locomotor system
• Communication with patients vs. with medical staff: plain English vs. scientific English
• Pathophysiology and pain: assessment and treatment protocols
• Understanding and translating diagnostic reports
• Vocabulary of the central and peripheral nervous systems
• The nurse's toolbox and intercultural competence
• Q&A session with a U.S. nurse (in co-presence with the instructor)

Evaluation criteria

Knowledge of vocabulary and morphosyntactic structures related to the profession and the field of expertise (medical-scientific and clinical). Intercultural competence in communication with medical staff or with patients. A score from 0 to 30 will be assigned during the evaluation and assessment of the final test.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The grade will be calculated solely based on the result of the final written exam.
