Learning outcomes

The course provides the student with the basic notions on labor/delivery, the mechanisms causing the start of labor, the factors and the phenomena involved in delivery.
It deals with normal delivery and with dystocia, in the different fetal presentations. It introduces elements of low and high risk pregnancies.

Program

Endocrine aspects of pregnancy and labor.
Factors of delivery: the pelvis (diameters, pelvimetry), the fetus (the fetal head, the fetal body), the contractions. Evaluating uterine contractions. Maternal changes during labor ( lower segment, the cervix, effacement and dilatation, forewaters, perineal distension), fetal plastic changes and feto-maternal modifications ( reduction, engagement, descent, internal rotation, etc.) Practical training.
Assisting labor in the vertex and breech presentation.
Mode of delivery in multiple pregnancy. Birth plan.
Rupture of membranes at term, management and complications.
Perineal tears, episiotomy. Video. Perineal hematoma.
Assisting the immigrant pregnant woman.
Intrauterine death and stillbirth.

Examination Methods

Written evaluation with multiple choice test and oral examination whenever judged appropriate.
