Learning outcomes
The student at the end of the course will be able to recognize:
1. the anatomy and physiology of motor functions relevant for the function of swallowing, the containment and the expulsion of the faeces.
2. the functional alterations of the digestive system, both primitive and secondary to traumatic diseases, and to neurological and neuromuscular diseases.
Program
Swallowing function:
- Anatomical structures. The student must be able to describe and recognize these structures and define their morphological relations, including in relation to other structures vicinori.
- Function. The student must know the mechanisms of swallowing function and their neuronal and muscolar control, and must to be able to describe the various stages of swallowing. Moreover, he will have to describe the morphological and functional changes .
- The student will also learn about the differences in swallowing function in adult and infant.
- The student must acquire some basic knowledge on the relationship between swallowing function, posture, state of consciousness, type of food.
- Esophageal motility and esophageal motor disorders.
2. Function of fecal continence and evacuation:
- Anatomical structures. the student will be able to describe and recognize the anatomical structures of the pelvic floor, in the male and female, their innervation extrinsic and intrinsic. In particular, the student will be able to correlate the muscle and bone structures of the pelvic floor with their function.
- Function. The student must be able to describe the function of the individual structures and / or groups of structures of the pelvic floor for the purpose of function of continence and of expulsion of the stool, to define the function of continence and evacuation mechanisms, to interpret the biological and psycho-environmental significance, and to have basic knowledge about the measurement procedures of the anorectal function.
- The physiological significance of the procedures for assessing the continence function and fecal expulsion.
- Constipation, megarectum, megacolon, irritable bowel syndrome.
3. Malabsorption syndrome:
- anatomical structures: functional anatomy of the small intestine.
- function: mechanisms of nutrient absorption and gut barrier.
- pathological conditions: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease.
