Learning outcomes

General aims:
Provide to students the basic knowledge necessary to understand the mechanisms of action(s) of the drugs and predict and manage their therapeutic and toxic effecs

Specific aims:
At the end of the course the student will:
Know the basic principles of drug-receptor interaction and the generation of effects
Know the clinical aspects of drugs in therapy, including appreciation of the dose-response relationships, the concept of efficacy and of adverse reaction, the basic glossary
Know the principles of drug discovery and production, the organization of clinical trials and of monitoring of adverse reaction
Know the basic aspects of pharmacokinetics in order to understand the appropriateness and the monitoring of a drug therapy
Understand the mechanims of action, the classification, the therapeutic effects and uses and the adverse reactions of antiinflammatory drugs and of drugs active on the neuromuscular system

Drug development and clinical trials
Terminology related to drug use, the methodologies of drug identification and clinical development.
Adverse reactions: classification and reporting
Pharmacovigilance
Analysis of drug/receptor interaction and the generation of drug effect(s).
Analysis of the pharmacokinetic properties of drugs applied to patient treatment with detailed knowledge and understanding of: 1- drug absorption with emphasis on differences between routes of administration;2- drug distribution and elimination; 3- drug metabolism; 4- quantitative approach to pharmacokinetics and the definition of a therapeutic regimen
Mechanisms of action, classification, therapeutic effects and adverse reactions and clinical uses of anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics such as paracetamol and opioids
Mechanisms of action of drugs active on the neuromuscular system
Mechanisms of action, classification, therapeutic effects and adverse reactions and clinical uses of anti-Parkinson drugs
