Learning outcomes
The formative objective of this course is the comprehension of how the characteristics of elder people can modify physiotherapy interventions in comparison to similar illnesses in adult individuals.
The course also aims at providing students with the specific competences to work out functional and cognitive evaluations in elder patients in order to define objectives and plan suitable physiotherapy interventions in relation to the physiotherapy diagnosis.
Furthermore, students will analyse the role of a physiotherapist working with a geriatric team for the definition and realization of a rehabilitative project.
Program
Geriatric physiotherapy undergoes the complexities of elder patients who present peculiar characteristics.
Starting from a general definition of ageing, lessons will focus on the characteristics of elder people and the geriatric syndromes as elements that can influence physiotherapy, paying special attention to the concept of frailty.
The characteristics and objectives of geriatric rehabilitation will be provided in relation to the rehabilitative project planned by a multidisciplinary team.
The following topics will be developed:
o The concept of functional disorder in geriatrics;
o Sarcopenia and the functional decline in elder people: the role of physiotherapy;
o Physical activity and adapted physical activity;
o Hypokynetic syndrome and immobilization syndrome;
o Falls in elder people;
o Containment;
o Cognitive decline in elder people: relapse in physiotherapy processes. Motor rehabilitation and cognitive decline. Cognitive rehabilitation.
o Objectives and strategies in physiotherapy, specifically in geriatrics, rehabilitation in long-term care, Integrated Home Care Services (ADI), residential long-term care structures.
o The role of a caregiver and educational competences of a physiotherapist.
o Peculiarities of physiotherapy treatments in elder patients affected by illnesses: neurologic (Ictus cerebri and Parkinson), orthopedics (in particular thigh bone fracture), respiratory and cardiac illnesses.
