Learning outcomes

The course aims to offer students the basics of sociological analysis of organizational processes with particular attention to those that characterize the provision of health services.
Starting from the classical organizational theories and from their mechanistic and hyper-rationalist view of organizatinal processes, the students will address the issues of overcoming the classical bureaucracy and the fragmentation of organizational processes. The course will offer elements of observation of the processes starting from the analysis of the organizational culture, of the frames of organizational and professional sense, and of the change of the working practices.

Program

The course is ideally divided into two parts.
The first part, carried out in the two introductory lessons, aims to illustrate the relevance of organizational analysis to understand the contemporary world and to analyze the work activities. Adopting a historical perspective, we present the classical theories that have most influenced the debate: Scientific Management (Taylorism) and the vision of the bureaucracy of Weber.
The second part, carried out in the remaining four lessons, presents the overcoming of the classical vision of organizations and provides the basic elements to observe and analyze the cognitive dimension, the organization as a cultural system, organizational learning, organizational and professional change.
Each lesson is organized with a lecture and a workshop based on the analysis of a case related to the topic.
