Learning outcomes

• Consolidation of grammar issues (B2/1 level CEFR) using a contextualized and applied approach.
• Introduction to human anatomy lexis: focus on brain functions/malfunctions and mental health.
• Knowledge of specialized vocabulary items related to the techniques used in psychiatric rehabilitation.
• Introduction to the linguistic skills required for effective patient-trainee interaction.

Program

The course programme focuses on the active participation in students-teacher interaction in order to stimulate the use of English in guided rehabilitation situations and research. The choice of teaching material is based on the recommended text but more importantly, on the updated material supplied by the teacher: students utilize the presented material to investigate and develop the topics under discussion.
Teaching includes the analysis and comprehension of ESP reading material and PowerPoint presentations with a view to recognizing the lexical and grammatical value of imbedded items. The presentation of research work carried out in small groups (normally three per group) permits the in-depth investigation and possible development of remedial solutions to patients' psychosomatic problems.

Examination Methods

The exam consists of two parts: an assigned research topic presented in PowerPoint and a written exam. The written exam takes place during the exam sessions established for the academic year in progress.
Research for the presentation is carried out in groups, normally three members, but the lingustic assessment and evaluation is finalised on the individual's performance.
The written exam evaluates English skills by means of a dictation (similar to note-taking), reading comprehension and a language in use gap-fill exercise: all these exercises are contextualized and relate to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.
The final result (pass/fail) is the overall average obtained from the abovementioned components.
