Learning outcomes

The student, at the end of the study path, must be able to:
- describe the characteristics of different ionizing radiations used for tumors's therapy (gamma rays, X rays, adrons) and their interactions with the biological tissues
- describe LET (Linear Energy Transfer) and RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness) of the different ionizing radiations
- describe the concepts of therapeutic ratio (TCP\NTCP) and therapeutic window in radiotherapy
- describe the operation of a linear accelerator for radiotherapy (LINAC) and its components
- describe the beam delivery techniques of a LINAC with MLC (multi leaf collimator), included static and arc techniques
- describe the operation and the beam delivery system of a Tomotherapy equipment
- describe the techniques of set-up and centering of the oncologic patient
- describe the operation of a TPS (Treatment Planning System) and the advanced techniques of planning nowadays used
- decribe set-up and IGRT during treatment
- describe, in general, the operation of a proton therapy equipment and the techniques of beam delivery with protons used nowadays

Program

- ionizing radiations and their interaction with biological tissues
- linear accelerators (LinAc) and circular accelerators (cyclotrons and syncrotrons) of particles for radiotherapy
- set-up and virtual simulation of the oncologic patient
- techniques of planning and delivery of the therapeutic beam
- IGRT and treatment of the oncologic patient
- therapy techniques with protons
