Learning outcomes
To understand and discuss the complex relationships between the private and the public, in order to determine how a public and shared ethics is formed or how possible conflicts can emerge in the public space between individual behaviour/choices and ethical-political decisions.
Title of the course for the year 2013-2014:Of a different gender: public ethics and feminist thought.
Description of the course: The course aims at offering a gendered perspective on the themes of public ethics. By starting from a historical and political analysis of the complex relationship between women and citizenship we will proceed with an assessment of some of the main positions of feminist thought, form the French Revolution onwards, in order to understand how gender stereotypes are uncritically accepted and continue to have a powerful effect in excluding or subordinating women in public discourse. Particular attention will be given to educational and mediatized contemporary contexts in which gender stereotypes are still influential.
