Learning outcomes

The lectures will present selected topics of integrative physiology applied to exercise and sports. By focusing on specific aspects of human physiology and a quantitative approach the course aims at fostering the understanding of the control mechanisms, the integrated function of organs and systems towards the maintenance of the body homeostasis. The course will focus on the acute responses to exercise and the adaptive responses to training in different subjects (sedentary, women, older adults, athletes) and ambient conditions (hypoxia, extreme temperatures).

- Introduction to exercise physiology: the concept of homeostasis, interpretation of graphics, the concepts threshold, sensitivity, gain, steady state.
- Statistics applied to exercise physiology: measures of variability; comparison between methods
- acute cardiovascular responses to exercise
- adaptiove cardiovascular responses to training
- thermoregulation
- indexes of cardiovascular fitness: definition, methods of measurament, utilization for monitoring and exercise prescription
- the quantification of training load
- physiological aspects of strength training
- physiological aspects of high intensity interval training
- pregnancy, physical activity and sport
